BUYING EGGS

Buying eggs can be a tricky thing.  Cage free, Natural, Organic, GMO free, Pasture Raised...what does all of this mean?

From my own experiences I have often been tricked by marketing and labels on items in the grocery store.  It can be confusing and frustrating understanding all the labels out there.  It is important to understand what you are buying. I was often buying Cage Free until I realized all that meant was that the chickens were not in a cage.  It didn't mean that they were in safe healthy living conditions, or being exposed to natural sunlight and fresh air.  So I started to research and watch documentaries showing the inhumane living conditions.  These "cage free" chickens often were in dark tight living quarters, which made them susceptible to infections and disease.

Look for the following labels:
*Organic
*Pasture-raised
*Certified Humane

I realized the best option for me was to select Certified Organic (not given growth hormones or antibiotics) Pasture Raised so that they are exposed to fresh air and sunlight, and able to roam on green pasture.

I cook with eggs in different dishes, so it is important for me to understand what I am buying and what the best option for me is.  I use eggs to cook:

  • Omlets
  • Frittatas
  • Baking
Although I do question eating eggs at all.  Do not be afraid to ask questions so that you know what your dollars are going towards and what you are putting in your body.  Your body is the most precious asset you will ever have.

Knowledge is power.
